I served as DP under Charmaine Poh as film director, and as part of a bigger team to bring to screen the work of dance artists Nirmala Seshadri & Soultari Amin Farid, due to festivals going online.
Produced by Bhumi Collective, the double bill Pok! and The Problematic Danseuse was a hybrid performance that blended lecture, dance, and video projection by multimedia and sound artist Mervin Wong.
Examining gender roles and cultural custodianship in their respective disciplines, two practitioner-researchers attempt to resolve their ambivalent relationships with their dance forms. Soultari Amin Farid and Nirmala Seshadri revisit their personal histories with Malay dance and bharatanatyam. How have they failed their dance disciplines? How have these forms failed them?
The show ran online 24 to 31 Oct 2020 as part of Esplanade’s da:ns festival.
